West Indies all-rounderĀ Dwayne Bravo, a legendary name in the T-20 format, recently announced that the current Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 will be his final professional cricket tournament. It would be a remarkable feat for the T20 specialist, especially in the CPL, as he is the highest wicket-taker in this format.
Bravo announced retirement just ahead of the opening match for Trinbago Knight Riders in the 2024 CPL season. The all-rounder used the social media post for the announcement with a mix of emotions, stating he is thankful for the journey and is eager to play his last professional tournament in front of home fans in the Caribbean. He underscored that this is not for the accolades but about the legacy he would want to leave behind as a good team player and human being.
His career in the CPL has been nothing short of remarkable. Since the league’s inception in 2013, he has played a pivotal role in growth and success for the league.
He began his CPL journey with the TKR known then as the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel, whom he led to multiple championships. He was influential both on and off the field, helping shape TKR into one of the most successful franchises in the history of the tournament.
As the game developed, He took 128 wickets from 104 games in his CPL career, in fact, this is a record-making figure, the all-time highest wicket-taker in the history of the league. His runs with the bat were no less meaningful; the way he has scored over 1,100 runs shows that he could alone change the course of the game.
But Bravo’s impact on T20 goes way beyond the CPL. He is still the leading wicket-taker all over the world in T20 cricket with 630 dismissals in 578 games. Across leagues, across countries, he has played for 27 different sides in his career, and won 17 titles, two of them ICC T20 World Cups with West Indies.
Also, stepping down from the CPL means the end of an era of T20 cricket. He is irreplaceable in the CPL, and his impact will continue to serve as motivation to cricketers in the Caribbean and all around the world for cricketing nations & generations to come.
